Exceptions are the Rule
I just got finished reading Chris Anderson’s book Long Tail so I’ll give you a review and a reaction.
1. The Review: Good. Read it.
2. The Reaction: The exceptions have become the rule of online business but I think that you can also apply this same philosophy to life.
For example, I am currently studying for the GMAT, the business equivalent of the SATs. Needless to say, there’s a lot of work and preparation in picking the right business school. One of the criteria I was mulling around in my head was “what is the matriculation rate of its students to advanced careers in marketing.
One way to look the matriculation rate (the old, hits way) is that the school with the greatest rate is probably the best school for me; however, what does it say about the schools with the lower percentage of students going to Forbes 500 companies? Are those students trying to get in the companies? What does it say about the individuals who had transcended the rates and made it to companies that others could not achieve? Was it an institutional cause, or an individual?
I came to the conclusion that as long as there was a channel to get to where I wanted to be, I was good to go.
How is your business taking advantage of the available distribution channels out there? What businesses do you see out there who could be doing a better job and how? Use the comments
